Zine:
Food Waste
For this project, I needed to choose a topic that has an international impact, then I needed to create a zine that highlights the importance and impact of my topic. I did my research on the food waste issue in the U.S.
My goal for this project was to create a zine that raised awareness on food waste because I think wasting food is such a bad yet common practice that we have in our lives. I wanted people to realize how big of a problem this is, but at the same time, how easily solvable it is if we just put in the effort. I wanted my zine to be educational on why we create so much food waste, and how it’s possible to reduce them. The easiest and most effective way in reducing food waste is to change our lifestyle and mindset about the food we eat and buy. Just by being more knowledgeable on how food is produced and discarded, we can reduce food ways in our lives.

For my front cover and inside front cover, I wanted to add in a quote and the statistics about food waste so it’s clear what my topic is about. Since my zine is full of pictures and text, I made sure that there’s enough breathing space by making sure the font type and font size is consistent. I also made sure that the images in each page align with each other.

For the next five pages, I wanted to list out some of the reasons why food waste is still a common issue today. I labeled what the page would be focusing on on top for all five pages so that it's easier to read. I alternated the darker background color and lighter background color in each page for the zine to be coherent.

The last page concludes the message of this zine and what we should do going forward. I ended the zine with a more hopeful and positive attitude so that people would be willing to do their own research on how to reduce food waste.
Since this is a grave topic I started with the dark background color, but at the end I wanted to leave a hopeful message so the last page of my zine has a lighter background color. I think the different colors from the first page and last page give an overall good contrast to the zine.
